Farmers Branch traces its roots to 1845, when it briefly served as the land office for the Peters Colony settlement effort, the same program that first brought families into this stretch of Dallas County. The city still preserves that history at Farmers Branch Historical Park, and today carries the nickname "The City in a Park" for its extensive green space.

Addison later voted to allow alcohol sales in 1976, well before most of Dallas County, which helped build the dense restaurant scene the town is still known for today.

Coppell started out as Gibbs Station in 1887 and only took its current name in 1892, after railroad financier George Coppell. The town grew slowly until DFW Airport opened next door in 1974, at which point it shifted fast from a farming community to a Dallas suburb. Long before any of that, in 1843, Sam Houston himself met with regional tribes along Grapevine Springs Creek to negotiate one of the Republic of Texas's early treaties.

Lewisville was known as Holford's Prairie until 1855, when landowner Basdeal Lewis renamed the settlement. The town didn't incorporate until 1925, and it grew quickly once the Army Corps of Engineers finished Lewisville Dam in 1955, creating the lake that now sits on the city's northern edge. A serious 1908 flood on the Trinity River, the same flood that put much of Dallas underwater, also reached Lewisville well before the dam was ever built.

The Colony didn't exist as a planned community until 1973, when developer Fox & Jacobs bought land on Lewisville Lake's eastern shore and built it as a designed residential city from scratch. It incorporated in 1977. The name itself is a nod to the Peters Colony, the same 19th-century land grant program that shaped the early settlement of Carrollton and most of this part of Texas.

Little Elm dates back to 1844, when C.C. "Kit" King settled the area along the creek that gave the town its name, and the settlement held Denton County's very first post office starting in 1852. It didn't incorporate until 1966. The town actually formed from the consolidation of several smaller settlements, including Lloyd, Hackberry, Dickson, and Hilltown, as the area grew around the lake.
